Organ excitement in Auckland on Saturdays @ 6.00pm

The Cathedral of St Patrick & St Joseph is pleased to announce it’s 2018 Organ Recital series.

Entitled ‘Saturdays @ 6’, the recitals feature three New Zealand organists, performing on the Cathedral’s baroque-style instrument: Nicholas Sutcliffe (30 June), James Tibbles (25 August) Rebecca Lee (22 September).

June 30

We start with Wellington-based organist Nicholas Sutcliffe Saturday 30 June at 6 pm.

Nicholas is a well-known organist, choir director, teacher and choral singer. He is currently the Director of the Combined Choir of Wellington Girls’ College and Wellington College.

He is no stranger to Auckland audiences, having grown up here. Nicholas was the Music Foundation Organ Scholar of Holy Trinity Cathedral, and held a L.C.M. Saunders Choral Scholarship; he is also an ‘Alumnus cum Laude’ of the Cathedral Music Foundation for services to the Cathedral Music Department. More recently, Nicholas spent four months as Acting Director of Music at Holy Trinity Cathedral from October 2017 through until the beginning of 2018.

Nicholas holds a BMus from the University of Auckland, where he studied Harpsichord & Organ with James Tibbles, Organ with Dr John Wells, and Conducting with Dr Karen Grylls. While at University, he was awarded first place at the New Zealand Organ Competition as part of the annual Organists’ Congress. During this time, Nicholas was also the Chapel Organist & Tutor at Dilworth School, and Organist at St Cuthbert’s College, working at both schools in a playing, teaching, and accompaniment capacity.

From 2012 until 2017, Nicholas worked as the Organist & Assistant Director of Music at Christ’s College, Canterbury, where he also taught academic Music, Religious Studies, and English. He spent several years as a residential Assistant Housemaster in one of the boarding houses and was the Music Director for the College’s annual Junior and Senior musical productions.

Nicholas is also an active singer, having been a member of the New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir, the New Zealand Youth Choir, and Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir. He is currently a member of the Tudor Consort of Wellington.

Nicholas will present a programme on the organ that includes Bach, Bruhns and Mendelssohn.
