Archer aims at Auckland

Malcolm Archer evensong

This noted UK church musician visited New Zealand recently. This was at the invitation of RSCMNZ Auckland Branch Chairman, Neil Shroff.

The main purpose of Malcolm’s visit was to conduct a weekend Choral School at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Auckland. Over 70 people enrolled for what proved to be a most enlightening and enjoyable singing course under his direction. The end result was a stunning Choral Evensong in the cathedral on Sunday 14th April with a wonderful rendition of Malcolm’s own recently composed anthem “All Creatures of our God and King”.

Choral workshops and masterclasses were also included in Malcolm’s itinerary. All who attended the events were very impressed with Malcolm’s musical skills, his effectiveness as a communicator and his warm and kindly personality.

Two young singers summed up Malcolm’s visit. “I really enjoyed the Choral School and learnt so much from Malcolm – he was inspirational” (Emily Hamilton). “The workshop with Malcolm Archer was a great experience where I learned ways to improve my singing and my contribution to a choir. The whole weekend was full of fun; I met interesting people and got to work with a really great musical director” (Sophie Lamb). (Both girls are choral scholars in the choir of Saint Andrew, Epsom.)

Whilst in NZ Malcolm gave recitals on the Willis organ in Saint Matthew’s in the city and on the newly opened Napier Cathedral organ.

It is hoped that he will return soon to New Zealand.
