The Anglican Transitional Christchurch Cathedral is blessed musically with talented musicians, Dr John Linker, Director of Music who conducts the Choir proper together with organist Harry Meehan.
In addition a strong band of choristers, known as the Cathedral Singers, serve when the Choir proper is in recess or engaged on outreach duties as well as for some special Services.
Until his retirement, after numerous years, they were conducted by Lennox Willett (his wife, Thelma, sang in the choir as a soprano).
The renowned teacher, choral conductor and Precentor, Jill Kerr was appointed his successor. Paul Brown continues in the role of organist for the choir.
Lennox can be seen on the far right of the photograph of the Singers taken on the occasion of his final Evensong. Russell Kent, an even earlier Conductor of the Singers can be seen on the far left in front of The Dean, The Very Reverend Lawrence Kimberley. On the left-hand end of the back row of men is Peter Simpson (also retiring with his Alto singing wife, Ruth) who served in both the choir proper for over 60 years and latterly the Cathedral Singers (click on the photo for an enlarged view).
