Carol Service – All Saints Church, Matamata

LESSONS and CAROLS

7 DECEMBER 2025

ALL SAINTS CHURCH – MATAMATA, NEW ZEALAND

The opening of this near-capacity service commenced with ‘Lively Organ’ music prelude by David Brookes.

The Venerable Andrew Evans in welcoming all, reflected on the Journey to Bethlehem and the Mystery of Christmas.

Throughout the service All Saints Choir presented three carols under the guidance of Clare Hitchcock:

  • ‘Torches’ (by John Joubert)
  • ‘Cradled in a Manager’ (D Brookes)
  • ‘Glory to God’ (Adams).

‘Torches’ was again sung at the conclusion of the service. The 20-strong Matamata Christian School choir (Years 3-8 pupils), presented two carols ‘Unto Us’ and their second ‘Isn’t He Beautiful’, was led by soloist Sophia Du Plessis accompanied by the choir. Sophia’s divine voice and the choirs’ harmony was well received.

Interspersed between the choirs and the nine Readings, were five carols where all participated and certainly the favourites ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ and ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’ filled the church with joyful singing.

The giving of food items and cash to go to the Matamata Foodbank, reminded us of the spirit of Christmas and sharing with others.

This beautiful service, led by Andrew Evans, David Brookes and Clare Hitchcock, was appreciated by all, as we reflected on the mystery of Christmas.
