Compline Workshop and Service

On Sunday, 15th March, choristers from around the Waikato, including myself and Andrew Evans, enjoyed participating in a Workshop and Service of the traditional form of Compline.

This was held in St Peter’s Cathedral Hamilton, under the direction of the Director of Music Rachael Griffiths-Hughes, and Precentor Ray Harlow. The service around the altar in the Cathedral, was led by Rev Peter Lord Cowell.

The music was sung Capella, and consisted of Plainsong, with the exception of the setting of a psalm to an Anglican Chant.

Between the Workshop and the Service choristers enjoyed refreshments and fellowship in the Cathedral Centre, organised by Kath Barnsley.

This form of Service and style of music proved to be ideal as an alternative to the longer form of Choral Evensong, being only 20minutes long with a simple form of music, and was a beautiful serene service, usually sung at the end of the day.

The activity was organised by the Waikato Branch of the RSCM.
